I know that it’s Fitness Friday, but I’d like to address something a little different today. I’ve heard about body image a lot in the past few days. Whether it’s how you view your own body or the common perceptions of what the “perfect” body is in our culture, the results are the same for most of us—disappointment, discouragement, waning confidence, depression, and maybe even shame.
According to worldwatch.org, Americans spend $8 billion dollars per year on cosmetics. And according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there was a 12% increase in cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2013 with the top 5 surgical procedures being: liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks and nose surgery. Why? Because we are constantly told through ads, magazines, and other media that we are not enough—not young enough, not tight enough, not thin enough, not smooth enough, not sexy enough. We have all heard these condemning messages for so long that these lies have become embedded in our hearts, in our minds, and in our self-talk. I’m not saying these things to add to anyone’s guilt or to judge anyone for choosing to have a cosmetic procedure. Please believe me in that. But I do want each of us to take a minute to recognize the lies that have permeated our lives and hearts. The only thing that can counteract these vicious lies is God’s truth:
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
Please take a moment to re-read that verse and really take it in. YOU are God’s masterpiece. Yes, you! He uniquely designed you. He created you anew in Christ Jesus so that you can do the good things He planned for you long ago. Embrace that truth today, my lovely friends, and know that you are indeed enough.
