Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12
I understand that I usually talk about vision and setting goals, so you may be a little taken by the title I have chosen for today’s post. Hang with me.
I know it’s important to have a vision, to daily review that vision, and then make a plan to accomplish your set goals. But I think today’s verse suggests that Jesus is reminding us that we need to simply follow Him. That those who walk with Him will walk in the light and not in darkness.
The Bible implies that the disciples lived to walk with Jesus, it doesn’t note anywhere that disciples said to Jesus, “Lord, What are we going to do next year? Where are we going?” I don’t read that Peter strolled along the shore with Jesus saying, “Lord, I’ve worked so hard catching fish, when am I going to be able to take a vacation?” or “I need to focus on my income because how else am I going to buy a new fishing boat or retire?”
Even though they fished, collected taxes, and did other every-day chores, they didn’t forget their focus: To have a relationship with Jesus and follow Him—wherever He led them, wherever He asked them to go.
God, the infinitely wise Lord of all creation, already has a plan for our lives. He’s already set our agenda and is just waiting for you to approach Him. He’s chosen to personally interact with you and desires to show you the future plans He has for you.
So for today, I want you to put aside your thoughts of your upcoming vacation or your retirement plan. I want you to cease focusing on what you are going to do next year. Instead, for today, I want you to focus on God’s desire to get you from where you are to where He’s leading you. When God reveals to you where He wants you, receive the invitation with your whole heart, soul, and mind. He will lead you from being self-centered to God-centered. He will lead you from lack to provision.
When Moses joined God and His plan, the Israelites experienced freedom from their slavery and bondage. Today I’m asking you to consider putting aside your focus on your future and join Him in His activity that is going on around you right now.
Do your dreams and goals seem unattainable? Is there something that is holding you back from fully following Him and His plan for your life? Is there something that you being a slave to in your life plans?
Spend time with Jesus today and ask Him where He wants you to go. Then simply follow Him.
