I went to a new class at my new gym the other day. I was excited to try something new and different, up until I actually walked into the class, that is. When I walked through the group exercise studio door, I was faced with a whole group of people who had their shoes off, mats laid out, and drumsticks in hand, ready to go. Since it was my first time, I was trying to look confident but I didn’t know where all the equipment was, I unsure of whether or not I wanted to expose my toes that are in a desperate need of a pedicure, and just felt overall uncomfortable.
But guess what? Once the music started, I realized I wasn’t the only one who was new, I wasn’t the only one who can’t keep a rhythm, I wasn’t the only one who was outside of their comfort zone, and I still had fun! We know that we grow the most when we step out of our comfort zones, so why do we try to avoid being uncomfortable so often? Fear of the unknown is probably the biggest reason.
The Bible says:
“Wise men and women are always learning,
always listening for fresh insights.”
–Proverbs 18:15 (The MSG)
At Revelation Wellness, we have a saying, “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.” I’m writing this today to encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone to try something new—whether it be a new workout, a new exercise, a new support group, a new Bible study, it’s your choice. You might be pleasantly surprised with what you discover—new strength, new friendships, new growth. Leave a comment and let me know how you’ll be stepping out of your comfort zone today. I’ll be adding a few songs into our workout using drumsticks today as my way of stepping out of my comfort zone. I’ll let you know how it goes!
