“Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” 1 Peter 3:3–4 NLT
How often do you check yourself in the mirror one last time before you leave the house? Maybe you fuss with your hair in an attempt to do what your hair stylist does so well, or you take one last look to make sure your accessories match your outfit. Then you use your compact mirror throughout the day to freshen up your lipstick or make sure your face doesn’t display smudged mascara.
We use a mirror to make ourselves presentable to man, and we use the Bible to make ourselves presentable to God. He wants to see our true beauty reflected, not our fading external appearances. We need to carry the Word in our purse, like we do our compact mirror, in order to check our true beauty—our spiritual reflection—throughout the day.
True beauty is found deep within. It’s found in the woman who gives her heart to God and to others. It’s being a good friend, a loving mother, or making a difference in someone’s life. True beauty is found in a woman who chooses to look at those around her instead of at her own reflection. This type of beauty is far more precious to God, but it also is attractive to others. It starts on the inside, then shines through on the outside. Beautiful.
If this type of beauty is what pleases God, then I want to pursue that type of beauty with all my heart.
Lord, help me daily check my spiritual reflection, so I can display the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit that You desire. Amen.
