When we discussed ways to detox the body at the April Faith & Food meeting, we discussed how the lymphatic system helps rid the body of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials. The lymphatic system is God’s design to help to naturally detox the body. One way you can stimulate your lymphatic system is with deep breathing.
Deep breathing can be done anywhere, at any time. It can also reduce stress levels. Also, several studies on women during the menopausal transition have found that deep breathing and other relaxation techniques reduce both the frequency and severity of hot flashes. All good news, right? So let’s give it a try:
- Sit or lay comfortably. Relax your shoulders down and away from your ears. Then, because you can’t fully inhale until you empty your lungs completely, begin with a full, slow exhalation while counting to 5.
- Now, inhale slowly, again counting to 5, breathing through your nose. Inhale as fully as possible, expanding your belly as you breathe in. Hold for 2 counts.
- Repeat 5-10 times.
If you add deep breathing to your day, whether it be in while getting ready in the morning, in the car while driving, or when laying down to go to sleep, you will help stimulate your lymphatic system as well as relax your mind and body.
