“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19 (NLT)
Perhaps you’ve seen this verse sometime in the last week or two. Whether it’s a new year, new month, new week, or simply a new day, I think we all enjoy a fresh start. It’s a time to put aside the missteps and misgivings of our past, gather our resilience and fortitude, and begin again. I think each one of us can look to at least one of area of our lives that could use a fresh take on it, right?
The thing I love about this verse is that God desires new things for us as well. He doesn’t want us to continue to sit in our comfort zone, or worse yet, a stagnant zone. Instead, He wants to explore new ways with us—so much so that His Word says that He will make new paths through the wilderness and create rivers in the dry wastelands of our lives and that He’s already begun this work.
Deep down, as much as we like to be comfortable and surrounded with the familiar, our hearts yearn for the challenge of growth and change. If you’ve ever done the experiment in grade school of growing a plant from a seed in a small, see-through container, you know that growth is hard work. The baby plant that is held inside the seed germinates and breaks through the soil. The roots of the little plant extend deeper into the soil. Meanwhile, the stem rises through the soil, eventually working its way toward the surface. Just as growth takes effort on the part of the baby plant, personal growth takes diligent, intentional, and consistent focus.
