“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)
Most of us desire deep and honest friendships in our lives. Friends who will love us even when we are at our worst, friendships that are more than smiley faces and greeting cards.
But what we need are friends that will hold us accountable to God’s standards—friends that sharpen us. And, let’s face it we need refining. Constantly. We need to push past the surface, and that’s what a good friend will do. The Proverbs tells us when we hang around wise people, we become wiser. Having a loving friend can expand our capacity to love. Studying with a biblically knowledgeable friend can enhance our understanding of Scripture. It’s through solid and deep friendships such as these that we grow and flourish.
He built us to sharpen others, in order to advance the Kingdom of God. When we don’t have friends that encourage us, or challenge us to grow, we become dull. We become stagnant in our growth because we do not let others or have anybody to speak truth into our lives, nor do we do it for others.
I’m blessed to do life with such a friend. She brings life into a fresh and a new perspective. She speaks with honesty, even if sometimes it’s hard to take. I welcome it. I need it. She’s quick to remind me of my calling, my worthy purpose here on earth, as she turns my heart toward God and His ways. She challenges me, and I’m a better woman, a better daughter of the King because she’s my friend.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for caring about every detail of our lives, including friendship. Bless us with sharp friends and help us to be one. Amen.
